Reflection No. 5: Overall Module Reflection

Image
Through this module, I have gained a profound understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and the importance of supporting them to overcome these challenges. As a social work trainee, I now realize the significant role I can play in making our society more inclusive and supportive of individuals with disabilities. One aspect that particularly resonated with me is the concept of accessibility. I have come to appreciate that accessibility is not just an added convenience; it is a fundamental requirement for creating an inclusive society. By ensuring that our physical spaces, products, and services are accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities, we can empower people with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of life. This includes not only physical accessibility, such as ramps and lifts but also digital accessibility, such as designing websites and software interfaces that are usable by individuals with diverse needs. Recognizing the importa...

Reflection No.4: Video Presentation o Persons with Deafness

Image
One of the module's most exciting activities for me was creating a video presentation with my team. The task required a lot of effort and creativity, but it was also pretty interesting and engaging. For me, the most challenging component of this assignment was learning and documenting sign languages. However, I truly enjoyed learning the basic sign languages that would be useful when conversing with deaf people. I really enjoyed working with my classmates and learning about their various viewpoints and concepts. I greatly valued the suggestions and encouragement we offered one another along the process. While working on this assignment, I became aware of the significant number of abilities necessary for productive teamwork. One of them is communication. In addition to sharing information, communication also involves actively listening, respectfully expressing one's viewpoints, clearly stating one's intentions when asking questions, and resolving disagreements in a pos...

Reflection No.3: Class Presentation

Image
As a university student, I have encountered numerous challenges that have tested my academic and personal abilities. Among these challenges is the daunting task of presenting in front of my lecturers and classmates. Recently, I missed a class and was given the task of presenting on the charity model of disability. This was my first presentation for the semester, and I was quite nervous. To prepare for my presentation, I spent three days creating a PowerPoint presentation. I focused on practicing positive visualization, which I found to be the most helpful tip for improving my presentation skills. However, one of the most challenging parts of preparing for my presentation was finding relevant photos and graphics to use. In the past, I have struggled with controlling my nervousness before, during, and after presentations. However, this time I found myself feeling comfortable and confident in front of my classmates. I attribute this to my subconscious telling me that nobody was paying...

Reflection No. 2: Diversity and Disability

Image
Regarding the second unit on Diversity and Disability, I found the information on the eight forms of disabilities to be informative. However, what intrigued me the most was learning about the different types of learning disabilities and their difficulties. I had always struggled to differentiate between them until I studied this unit. I learned about the differences and similarities among the categories that often confuse most individuals. I now understand that learning disabilities are long-term disorders that primarily do not respond well to interventions because they permanently shape a student's life. On the other hand, learning difficulties constitute the aspects influencing the common understanding of things. At the same time, learning differences form unique ways and rates of learning that make up every student. Through reading first-hand experiences of people living with a disability, I gained insight into the various characteristics of several learning disabilities. ...

Reflection No. 1: Basic Goodness of Human Being

Image
As I reflect on my study of unit one, I have gained an understanding of the crucial importance of treating individuals with disabilities with basic goodness, openness, clarity, and warmth. It is essential to acknowledge that they share the same aspirations for health, love, security, inclusion, and happiness as everyone else. However, I can imagine that achieving happiness and prosperity through harmony within oneself, with others, and with nature can be challenging for individuals with disabilities. I can also understand that societal barriers and physical limitations can make it difficult for individuals with disabilities to achieve this harmony. Despite these challenges, I am sure that with proper education and understanding, individuals with disabilities can learn how to live in a way that promotes overall health and well-being, prevents problems from arising, and fosters a sense of connection and fulfillment. For example, if I were a person with a disability, I would focus on ...
